Mark is reliable, hardworking and always willing to go the extra mile. He never complains if we go overtime or work outside “normal” hours. He also has a good sense of humour and is fun to work with. He has a good cinematic eye / eye for detail, creating high quality footage that adds value to our productions.
Most of all Mark is very thorough and uses his own initiative to create interesting camera angles. His “shoot to edit” style is a real help with projects overall too. Mark keeps his cool, is unflappable and definitely recommended. Hire him!
Mark’s style of cinematography has both a ‘slickness’ as well as a sense of ‘rawness’ to it. A mix of ‘guerrilla-technique’ blended with that professional touch. While hard to define, he brings a keen eye and sense of balance to the kind of work that I am able to produce.
Although the majority of my work entails visual effects, with Mark I have the pleasure of knowing that that we’re shooting with something like post-production in mind. It might seem like an obvious observation, but it’s a rare thing to find in this industry.
Mark works fast and has an easy-going, approachable personality, which always makes for an enjoyable and inspiring experience. He’s also not afraid to try new things and techniques to get the shot that works – even if it means crouching into odd positions or taking a golf ball to the head 🙂
Utilizing surroundings and location to extract strong concepts and fresh ideas on the spot is another of Marks great talents. This compliments the ease he has in filming that allows the strength of storytelling to remain a point of focus.
For all the above reasons I recommend Mark’s work. It’s a fact that, in this industry and in these times, Mark’s type of versatility is highly underrated. I can’t wait for us work on the next big thing!
A proven ability to work with a wide range of subject matter, and an empathetic response to working directly with community based organisations and individuals make Mark a special asset. Projects get completed on time, and his problem-solving approach is very useful when difficulties arise – it feels like working in partnership.
He is also always prepared to go the extra mile for the mutually desired result, and that is much appreciated. He is not an ‘ego’, but is quietly passionate about his work. As well as always having a laugh working with Mark, his commitment to technical quality, accuracy of content and creative vision help make sure we get an end result we can be proud of.
Mark’s is honest and his fees are always fair. I’d recommend his services without hesitation – because he does what he says he’ll do and more.
Professionalism and hard work, along with the ability to quickly understand your requirements and run with them, help make Mark van Wijk an exceptional cameraman. Nothing is too much trouble. He goes the extra mile and turns things around fast. He’s also very quick to establish a relationship with those he is filming, which immediately relaxes the individual, particularly those that are nervous in front of the camera. What I like most is the fact that I can leave him to get on with the job and know it is going to be done in a professional way. I’ve worked with several crews before and many can be so demanding. In contrast Mark just gets on with the job and delivers a fine product.
Mark is a pleasure to work with. For starters he is a great camera worker with an excellent work ethic. He’s a fun guy to have around and always willing to jump in and be helpful where needed in the project. We quickly established a close bond and I really felt that Mark was into the art of film making – more interested in getting it perfect than wrapping for the day.
Mark also has a great eye for the aesthetics and the willingness to go the extra mile to get the perfect shot. And because he’s also an editor, he really knows how to film efficiently so that the post-production is easier.
Yes – Mark knows his stuff, works hard, always brings good energy, is meticulous in details and really shows he cares for each project.. He’s a great guy to work with and a real pro.

At Pasella we have a very specific style. But I always find that Mark is able to apply creativity within the boundaries of the show that make even the basic shots more interesting.
As an insert director I have always appreciated Mark’s approach on set – he works great in a team, but is also able to take lead where needed. And he is ready and willing to give suggestions that truly help every scene to be shown at maximum potential.
On a more personal level I particularly enjoy our wildlife shoots, and find his strength in these environments evident. It does not sit well with all cameramen to work with unpredictable elements, but Mark has shown his ability to almost predict when certain actions would take place, like a bird taking off in flight, for example, or a specific movement, whether it be grass in the wind or an animal movement.
As a person he is professional yet fun to have on set. I find that his positive attitude creates not only a good environment for us to be creative in, but he is really good at setting guests at ease, and therefore allowing space for them to perform better.
Mark is patient and mature in his actions and willing to listen. He works well with an understanding of the constant schedule constraints and therefore does not waste time but stays sufficient in his work.
I had the opportunity to work with Mark van Wijk during the year that he was employed as cameraman/DOP for SABC2’s lifestyle program, Pasella.
The format of the show meant shooting a varied range of material – from cooking inserts to travelogues, profiles and “behind the scenes” stories. No matter what the content or the circumstances, I always found Mark to be a highly professional cameraman who truly loves his work. He is dedicated, enthusiastic, and an absolute pleasure to work with.
Technically, Mark is familiar with a wide range of cameras, and is as comfortable shooting on a D50 (which came over with the Ark) as on a full HD kit with mattbox and all the bells & whistles. When required he is also able to do his own sound. Creatively, Mark’s stills background means enormous attention to detail when it comes to both composition and lighting. Lighting in particular is an area in which I always found his work to be exceptional, in addition to his professionalism and the assurance of quality material,
Mark is a personable guy who makes an effort and gets along with everyone – a real plus when a crew is shooting for weeks away from home! Some of the inserts I am proudest of, which were also the most enjoyable to shoot, were shot with Mark.
I would recommend him as a cameraman/DOP without hesitation.
Area 51 Productions has worked with Mark van Wijk on many occasions over the past years. We were immediately impressed when he first approached us with a showreel. Our director, John Inglis, recognised Mark’s professional and distinct style of filming from having studied at the same institution.
Since this time we have watched Mark grow from strength to strength and are very proud of his latest documentary work. I also recognise a unique creative talent in Mark that I have seen in other camera professionals / DOP’s, such as Craig Foster and Nick Good. They all think out of the box, take calculated risks, produce award-winning documentaries and make it look easy.
Recently, we were approached by an overseas company looking for not only a wildlife cameraman, but a “spiritual being” as well. That was the brief! I didn’t hesitate to call Mark and the production company have not stopped thanking me since. Mark goes the extra mile both creatively and physically for us and continues to compliment our company profile with every shoot.
Mark is reliable, creative, trustworthy and pleasant to work with! Of course we appreciated that he helped the team keep to their daily deadlines and was pleased he delivered a quality product. But what we really love is that Mark is a one-stop shop. The fact he has his own camera equipment, vehicle and editing suite enables him to negotiate a competitive package deal for each client.
Most of all you know you are in good hands with Mark. He cares about the end product and gives input and advice where needed.
